Multipurpose tool – Google Earth

Google Earth is a free product made available by Google that lets you view the entire earth in 3D, but has enough detail that you can zoom in and view your own house! You can get this tool from http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html

• Explore the moon.
• You can fly under the surface of oceans and explore underwater terrain.
• You can view older imagery of the earth.

Technologies Used:
Google Earth Technology

• Google Earth uses your computer’s disk cache to speed up transfer time.
• Google owns several software patents that relates to Google Earth functions and one such patent is Universal Texture (UT) which uses two methods for getting large amounts of information to your computer – mip mapping and clip stacking.
• Mipmaps work in an inverted pyramid structure, stacked on each other with each level having twice the resolution of the one under it.
• The benefit of clip stacks is when the user tells the program where they want to fly, the program uses an algorithm to figure out which sections of the larger virtual texture are needed and uses only those sections to create the final images.
• Google Earth has created a giant, multi-terabyte, hi-res image of the whole Earth and serves it up one small piece at a time in bites your computer can easily digest.

WHAT MAKES SOMETHING A TRADE SECRET?

Most of the countries have trade secret laws which are concerned with the protection of proprietary information against unauthorized commercial use by others. Trade secret is not limited to certain industry. Even a security consultant who works as information security officer in IT field needs to know what makes something a trade secret.

The most important point to understand about trade secrets is that there is no crisp, clear definition of what they are. The context in which a dispute over ownership of information arises will determine whether a court will treat the information as a trade secret. As a general rule, information that has commercial value and that has been scrupulously kept confidential will be considered a trade secret; the owner of the information will be entitled to court relief against those who have stolen or divulged it in violation of a duty of trust or a written nondisclosure agreement.

Organizations cannot register their trade secrets with the government to protect proprietary information like patents, copyrights, and trademarks. The only way to ensure protection of a trade secret is to keep the information confidential. Lawyers practicing trade secret law help clients protect secret and proprietary information and file a suit against misappropriation of trade secrets.

Under Art. 39 of TRIPS (protection of undisclosed information), members are obliged to ensure protection of undisclosed information through systems developed through appropriate legislations. TRIPS is an agreement by World Trade Organization (WTO) on trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights.

In most countries, a trade secret may consist of any formula, pattern, physical device, idea, process, or other information that:

• provides the owner of the information with a competitive advantage in the marketplace, and
• is treated in a way that can reasonably be expected to prevent the public or competitors from learning about it.

Why Trade Secret Is Hot Topic These Days

Secret when once divulged, there is no protection. Since competitors take advantage of this, companies protect their trade secret from misappropriation.

What is required in addition to a law degree to understand and protect a client’s processes?

Education and Background in relevant field will help lawyers to protect their client’s secret information. For example, lawyers with Information Technology background can better understand client technologies and processes.

Information’s which are classified as trade secret must have Commercial value.

What does a commercial value mean?

  • Must confer some economic benefit on the holder
  • This benefit must derive specifically from the fact that it is not generally known to everyone
  • How to demonstrate:

- benefits derived from use
- costs of developing the Trade Secret
- licensing offers

Information that qualifies as a trade secret is subject to legal protection against theft and misappropriation as a form of valuable property. If the owner has not diligently tried to keep the information secret, courts will usually refuse to extend any help to the trade secret owner if others learn of the information.

As a general rule, trade secret is made up of three legal components. First being, the information must be secret. Second it must have commercial value. And finally, owners must have taken necessary steps to protect it. Also trade secret laws vary from country to country.

Selecting tools

When you start your job as a security consultant often this question comes to your mind, “What is the best tool for my job?” The answer here is, a single tool cannot help to achieve your goal effectively.

As with any project, if you don’t have the right tools for ethical hacking, accomplishing the task effectively is difficult. This statement doesn’t mean that you will discover all vulnerabilities if you use the right tool.

Know the personal and technical limitations. Many security-assessment tools generate false positives and negatives. False positives tools may miss vulnerabilities. And false negatives mean incorrectly identifying vulnerabilities. If you’re performing tests such as social engineering or physical-security assessments, you may miss weaknesses.

There is no tool which can do everything. Most of the tools do specific tests only.  For the same reason you wouldn’t drive in a nail with a screwdriver, you shouldn’t use a word processor to scan your network for open ports. This is why you need a set of specific tools for each task in ethical hacking. The more and better tools you have, the easier your ethical hacking efforts are.

Ensure you that you use right tools for your job:

_ To crack passwords, you need a cracking tool such as LC6, John the Ripper, or pwdump. Whereas a port scanner like SuperScan will not crack passwords.
_ For an in-depth analysis of a Web application, a Web-application assessment tool such as Whisker or WebInspect is more appropriate than a network analyzer (such as Ethereal).

When selecting the right security tool for the task, ask around. Get advice from people who work on same field. A simple groups search on Google or perusal of security portals, such as Security Focus, Search Security, and IT Security, often produces great feedback from other security experts.

Thousands of tools can be used for ethical hacking and the number of tools used for this purpose is increasing day by day. The following list runs down some of commercial, freeware, and open-source security tools:

_ Nmap

_ EtherPeek

_ Netcat

_ Snort

_ Wireshark

_ LC6

_ Nessus

_ Network Stumbler

_ ToneLoc

Often security and hacking tools are misunderstood for their capabilities. This misunderstanding has cast negative light on otherwise excellent and legitimate tools.

We will discuss about these tools in detail on other articles. Listing of tools mentioned in this article are a few among the great tools available these days.

Look for these characteristics in tools for ethical hacking:

  • Adequate documentation
  • Detailed reports on the discovered vulnerabilities, including how they may be exploited and fixed
  • General industry acceptance
  • Availability of updates and support
  • High-level reports that can be presented to managers or non-techie types

Most of the tools are complex in operation. Whichever tools you use, familiarize yourself with them before you start using them. Here are the basic steps for that:

_ Read the readme and online help files for your tools.

_ Study the user’s guide.

_ If possible, attend classroom training from the security-tool vendor or another third-party training provider.

These tools and their analysis help you to prepare final report.
